Around 12% of global trade passes through the Suez Canal. On March 23 2021 the Ever Given, a 400m long and 200,000 tonne container ship grounded, blocking the canal. The stranded ship was holding up an estimated R135bn of trade each day. That equates to R5.8bn an hour, or R98m a minute. Lost at Sea

According to the British International Freight Association, an estimated 1 382 containers are lost at sea each year. This represents less than one-thousandth of 1% of the roughly 226 million containers currently shipped each year. Before 2013 the average number of containers lost at sea was 675 per year, but in 2013 the sinking of the MOL Comfort resulted in a loss of 4 293.
